Tar Heels No. 2 Seed In Women's Soccer NCAA Tournament
November 7, 2022 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Atlantic Coast Conference regular season co-champion North Carolina is a No. 2 seed in the 2022 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship and will host Old Dominion in the first round on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Dorrance Field. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The winner of Saturday's match advances to the second round to face the winner of No. 7 seed Georgia and Samford the following weekend in the second round.
Notre Dame, who the Tar Heels didn't face during ACC play this season, is the No. 1 seed in their region, while Stanford is the No. 3 seed and Michigan State is No. 4.
The ACC boasts two of the tournament's four No. 1 seeds, as regular season co-champion and tournament champion Florida State (13-2-3) joins Notre Dame on the top line. The league's 10 total teams in the field are the most of any conference.
UCLA and Alabama received the other No. 1 seeds.
North Carolina earned the No. 2 seed in its quadrant after putting together a 15-4-1 overall record with an 8-2 ACC record. The Tar Heels, who are currently the No. 5 team in the NCAA's Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), posted eight wins over teams selected to the field of 64.
This marks Carolina's 41st successive NCAA Tournament appearance. UNC is the only team to appear in every NCAA Tournament dating back to the first tournament in 1982. The Tar Heels have won 22 of the previous 40 NCAA titles.
Old Dominion (9-8-3) brings a four-match unbeaten streak to Dorrance Field after winning the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title in its first year in the league.
Saturday's match will be the first meeting between UNC and ODU since 1982 when the Monarchs were a club team.
First round matches will be played Nov. 11-13, while the second and third rounds will take place Nov. 18 and 20, respectively, and the quarterfinals on Nov. 25-26. The 41st annual NCAA Women's College Cup will be played Dec. 32-5 at Wake Med Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
