CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- University of North Carolina women's soccer (9-4, 3-2 ACC) claimed a 3-1 win over Pitt (5-7-2, 1-5 ACC) Sunday evening at Dorrance Field. Olivia Thomas led the way for the Tar Heels notching a goal and two assists.
Tessa Dellarose had an early chance to score in the fifth minute but curled her shot just wide of the Panthers' net. Hannah Johann earned her second consecutive start as goalkeeper and made an impressive play in the 13th minute. A Panther attacker got behind the defensive line and was in on goal when Johann ran up to the edge of the box and poked the ball away from the attacker to prevent Pitt from scoring.
The Tar Heels got on the board in the 17th minute courtesy of the right foot of Linda Ullmark. Olivia Thomas crossed the ball from the left side of the box and after taking a deflection, the ball fell to Ullmark who slotted home the first goal of the day to give Carolina a 1-0 advantage.
Two minutes into the second half, Pitt equalized on a goal from Lucia Wells.
In the 48th minute, Kate Faasse and Thomas both had excellent chances to score, but the Pitt goalkeeper Abby Reisz made two saves to keep the score knotted at one-all.
Carolina found the go-ahead goal in the 56th minute. Again, Thomas created the scoring opportunity with a cross into the box to Lauren Malsom. Malsom used a touch to control the ball and then drilled it into the back of the net to put the Tar Heels in front, 2-1.
After sustaining pressure from Pitt, Carolina got back on the board in the 77th minute. Thomas carried the ball down the left side, made a move around a defender, and powered the ball into the net to give the Tar Heels a two-point lead.
Carolina held on to win the game, 3-1.
