CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina gymnastics team is one of 16 collegiate programs headed to Las Vegas, Nevada, from Jan. 6-7, 2023, for the inaugural Super 16 presented by Ozone. The event marks the start of the 2023 women's collegiate season and will be held at Orleans Arena, located just west of the Las Vegas Strip.
Â
Including UNC, the universities set to compete in the Super 16 presented by Ozone are Arizona State, Auburn, BYU, Cal, Fisk, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Rutgers, Southern Utah, Stanford, UCLA and Washington.
The Tar Heels will compete in the first session on Friday, Jan. 6, against Fisk, Southern Utah and Washington. The meet will begin at 5 p.m ET ( 2 p.m. PT).Â
Â
All-session and single-session tickets can be purchased here.Â
"From the number of teams competing, to Fisk's first competition, to the level of gymnastics that will be executed on the first weekend of the season, we are looking forward to this historic event. For those reasons and so many more, we are thrilled to be a part of this competition," said head coach Danna Durante. "Our 2023 team has been working hard to push Carolina Gymnastics forward and this competition will give us a tremendous opportunity to continue our growth."
The Super 16 presented by Ozone, the largest women's collegiate invitational with more than 300 athletes, will showcase the nation's top teams and gymnasts. The two-day competition will have four sessions with team, all-around and event champions for each quad.
Â
Fifteen of the 16 participating teams were ranked or received votes in the recent Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association preseason poll while the meet will mark the first in history for Fisk, the first Historically Black College or University to have a women's collegiate gymnastics team.Â
Â
Carolina checked in at No. 27 in the latest WCGA poll, its highest preseason ranking since 2007 and its eighth time receiving a preseason nod since 2001.Â
Â
The Tar Heels are eager to build upon a successful 2022 campaign where they saw their best final NCAA ranking in a decade at No. 32. After being crowned the East Atlantic Gymnastics League regular season champion, UNC received its highest national qualifying score since 2004 and earned its first NCAA Regional berth in five years.Â
