Gymnastics Receives Highest Preseason Ranking Since 2007
December 9, 2022 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina gymnastics program has been ranked 27th in the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association preseason poll by a vote of committee members, as announced by the organization Friday afternoon.Â
It marks UNC's highest preseason ranking since being tabbed 19th in 2007, also signaling its eighth time receiving a preseason nod since 2001.
"Receiving one of the highest preseason rankings in program history is a testament to the hard work and commitment our 2022 team put in to achieve last year's success," said Danna Durante, now in her second year as head coach. "This serves as tremendous motivation for us to stay focused on our process as we continue to raise the bar for Carolina Gymnastics heading into the 2023 season."
The Tar Heels, which were slotted at 35th in preseason last year before finishing the year at No. 32 during Durante's first season in Chapel Hill, are eager to build upon a successful 2022 campaign. After receiving its highest national qualifying score since 2004, the team earned its first NCAA Regional berth in five years and advanced to the second round.Â
Carolina was crowned the East Atlantic Gymnastics League regular season champion after posting an undefeated 7-0 mark while five Tar Heels combined for 12 All-EAGL honors. UNC also recorded its best bar, beam and road scores since 2004 in addition to its highest season-opening mark in program history.Â
Fans can get a first look at Carolina's 2023 squad Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m. ET for the annual blue/white intrasquad meet at Carmichael Arena.Â
The full 2023 schedule, which features five home meets, can be found here.Â
