Softball Opens 2022 With Win Over George Washington

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Carolina softball team opened the 2022 season with a 1-0 victory over George Washington on Friday afternoon in the first game of the Carolina Classic.

Senior Hannah George earned her 25th career win the circle in the pitchers' duel, striking out three and allowing just three hits and three walks in the complete game shutout. It was the fourth complete game of George's career and her first since Feb. 18, 2020.Â

Junior Katie Perkins had the Tar Heels' first hit of the season, a no-out base hit through center in the bottom of the third. Kianna Jones followed, reaching on a fielding error, and advancing pinch runner Carsyn Snead to second. Snead went on to steal third and score on a throwing error from the Colonials.

Destiny Middleton had Carolina's second hit of the day in the bottom of the fifth, a two-out single up the middle. She then stole second, but a caught foul ball stranded her to end the inning.

Despite her earning the loss, George Washington's pitcher Sierra Lange allowed no earned runs and just two hits.

Carolina improves to 3-1 in the all-time series over the Colonials.

The Tar Heels return to Carolina Softball Stadium on Saturday morning for a 10:30 a.m. matchup against Lipscomb.
