Softball Earns 9-6 Victory Over Lipscomb Behind Hot Bats

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Tar Heel bats were scorching hot in Columbia on Saturday, with the team recording 14 hits in their 9-6 win over Lipscomb during the second day of the Carolina Classic.
Senior Taylor Greene matched her career-high of three RBIs, while junior Bri Stubbs was a perfect 3-of-3 at the plate and recorded the first triple of her career.
Carolina hit .424, its highest team batting average since Feb. 19, 2021.
The Bison got scoring started early, plating one run off two hits in the first inning. Carolina responded with three runs of their own in the second.
Kianna Jones opened the inning with a four-pitch walk, followed by a single from Stubbs. Both advanced on the throw, putting Jones on third and Stubbs on second with no outs.
Greene was able to plate Jones with an RBI single down the right field line and advanced Stubbs to third. Kiannah Pierce then reached on an error and Stubbs scored, giving Carolina a 2-1 lead.
With two outs, Destiny Middleton hit an RBI single to center, scoring pinch runner Carsyn Sneed.
Lipscomb was able to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the second, plating three runs on two hits.
In the top of the third, graduate Sara Jubas led off with a double to right field, her second double of the day. Stubbs then tripled, scoring Jubas. Carolina went up 5-4 with Greene's second RBI of the day, a single to the shortstop that allowed Stubbs to score.
Both the Tar Heels and Bisons plated a run in the fourth inning, with UNC's coming off a wild pitch that scored Skyler Brooks who got on base with a triple.
The Tar Heels scored three more runs in the fifth courtesy of an RBI single from Greene and a two RBI triple from Pierce to give Carolina a four-run cushion, 9-5.
Lipscomb scored the final run of the day in the seventh, a two-out RBI double to make the final score 9-6.
Freshman Lilli Backes made her first career start in the circle, while sophomore Talia Hannappel earned her first Tar Heel victory. Backes pitched 2.0 innings, striking out three and allowing four earned runs, while Hannappel went five innings with two earned runs, four walks and three strikeouts.
Carolina improves to 2-0 on the season and is now 3-1 in the all-time series over Lipscomb.
The Tar Heels close out the weekend with a Sunday doubleheader, first facing Virginia at 1 p.m. followed by South Carolina.
