Softball Improves To 4-0 With Victories Over Virginia And South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – For the first time since 2012, the Carolina softball team is 4-0 to start the season. With a 13-run Sunday afternoon, the Tar Heels first earned a 5-0 victory over Virginia followed by an 8-3 win against host South Carolina in the final day of the Carolina Classic.
Taylor Greene finished the weekend batting a team-best .455, tallying six RBIs, five hits, a triple and plating two runs in 11 at-bats.
In their first weekend as Tar Heels, Sara Jubas had five hits, three runs and three RBIs, while Kianna Jones recorded three hits, including the first Carolina home run of the season.
In the circle, Hannah George earned two victories, Talia Hannappel had a win and a save and Lilli Backes earned a win against the Gamecocks.
The Tar Heels finished the weekend batting .359 as a team.
GAME 1 – UNC: 5, Virginia: 0
After George posted a scoreless inning to open the game, Destiny Middleton hit a leadoff triple in home side of the inning. Sara Jubas plated her with a groundout to the pitcher, giving the Tar Heels a 1-0 advantage.
Both teams were scoreless in second, third and fourth innings. Bri Stubbs opened things up in the fifth, hitting a one-out single. Greene plated Stubbs with a triple to center field, followed by an RBI single from Kiannah Pierce to give Carolina a 3-0 advantage.
The Tar Heels plated the final two runs of the game in the sixth, courtesy of a Jubas RBI single and Katie Perkins stealing home on a wild pitch.
George earned the victory in the circle, going 5.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Talia Hannappel entered the circle and pitched 1.2 innings, preserving the shutout with two strikeouts and earning the save.
GAME 2 – UNC: 8, USC: 3
Middleton again wasted no time getting the Tar Heels offense started in the first inning, hitting a leadoff double. Jubas hit an RBI single to give Carolina the early 1-0 lead.
South Carolina was able to get two on base and then score via a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning to tie it up.
Aneshia Jordan recorded her second collegiate hit and first of the season in the third, followed by a Jubas single. Greene was able to score Jubas with a single to right field.
Carlie Myrtle earned both her first collegiate hit and RBI in the following at-bat, sending Jubas home to give the Tar Heels a 3-1 lead.
After a scoreless third, the Gamecocks were able to tie it up at 3 in the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, Kianna Jones hit a solo shot over the center wall to give Carolina the 4-3 lead.
The Tar Heel offense exploded in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs on three hits to go ahead by five runs.
Lilli Backes earned the first win of her career in the circle, throwing 3.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and allowing just two hits.
