Women's Lax Starts 2022 With 15-8 Win At No. 12 JMU

HARRISONBURG, VA.—Second-ranked North Carolina got big games from Caitlyn Wurzburger and Jamie Ortega and won at No. 12 James Madison, 15-8, in the 2022 season opener for both teams on Saturday at Sentara Park.
Wurzburger tied her career high with seven points, scoring three goals and adding a career-high four assists.
Ortega had a goal and three assists for four points, adding three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Ten different Tar Heel players scored goals as Carolina won for the 28th time in its last 29 games (dating to the start of the 2020 season). Twelve of UNC's 15 goals were assisted.
Ally Mastroianni had two goals and an assist, while Scottie Rose Growney and Alexa Gentile scored twice apiece. Andie Aldave had a goal and two assists and Tayler Warehime had a goal and an assist. Nicole Humphrey, Olivia Dirks and Reilly Casey each scored goals.
Taylor Moreno went the distance in goal for the Tar Heels, making four saves and adding four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Moreno improved to 1-0 this season and 49-6 in her career. She has tied the UNC career record for wins by a goalie with 49. Caylee Waters won 49 games in the cage between 2014 and 2017.
Carolina out-shot the Dukes, 36-18, with 30 of those shots being on goal. JMU's Molly Dougherty made 15 saves.
