Moreno Breaks Career Wins Record In 20-7 Win Over Furman
February 16, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—Graduate student Taylor Moreno broke the North Carolina program record for most career wins by a goalie as the second-ranked Tar Heels cruised by Furman, 20-7, in their home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Dorrance Field.
Â
Moreno made two saves and allowed two goals in 30 minutes of work in improving to 50-6 in her career in the cage. She passes Caylee Waters, who had 49 wins between 2014 and 2017.
"Honestly, it's surreal now thinking about it," Moreno said after the game of breaking the record. "It's a testament to my teammates, because I wouldn't be in this position without them and the work they put in on and off the field. They certainly make me better every day, so it's a testament to their hard work as much as it is mine. I'm very much appreciative of them and very honored to be in that rank."
"What a great accomplishment," UNC head coach Jenny Levy said. "Even though this is her sixth year, she's really only played for four years. She redshirted one year and didn't start until late the next year, and it's only our second game of this season. So it's quite an accomplishment considering all the great goalies we've had come through here. She's someone who's been a leader and someone who takes her position very seriously with a lot of pride and enthusiasm."
Â
The Tar Heels improved to 2-0 this season. Furman fell to 0-1. It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools in women's lacrosse.
Â
Jamie Ortega led Carolina offensively, posting five goals (on six shots) and tallying two assists for seven points. She moved into third place in ACC history in career goals with 271, passing Jen Adams of Maryland (1998-2001), who had 267. Sam Apuzzo of Boston College holds the record with 283 and BC's current player Charlotte North is second with 280.
Â
Ten Tar Heels scored goals in the game. Cailtyn Wurzburger had three goals and three assists Andie Aldave had a hat trick with three goals. Scottie Rose Growney chipped in two goals and an assist, Tayler Warehime scored twice, Sam Geiersbach had a goal and an assist and Melissa Sconone had two assists. Livi Lawton and Brooklyn Neumen scored single goals, while Emily Nalls had an assist.
Â
Carolina jumped out to a quick, 7-0 lead in the first 10 minutes, led 14-2 at halftime and never let the Paladins into the game.
Â
UNC dominated the team stats, boasting advantages in shots (37-14), draw controls (21-8) and ground balls (14-11).
Â
The Tar Heels will hit the road for their next game, visiting seventh-ranked Florida on Saturday in Gainesville, Fla.
