Softball Falls To Elon, 4-3

ELON, N.C. –The Carolina softball team suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday night, falling to Elon 4-3 in walk-off fashion on the road at Hunt Softball Park.
The Tar Heels (4-1) opened its first midweek game of the season game hot, with redshirt sophomore Kianna Jones hitting a three-run home run to give Carolina an early 3-0 lead in the first. The Phoenix (4-0) then hit a solo home run in the second and plated a run off a wild pitch in the fourth to make it a 3-2 game.
Neither team scored in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Despite senior Kiersten Licea drawing a leadoff walk in the seventh, the Tar Heels were not able to get anyone else on in the inning.
The Phoenix opened the seventh with back-to-back singles, followed by a walk to load the bases with no outs. Elon then hit a two-RBI single to center field, securing the victory.
Hannah George, Lilli Backes, Carlie Myrtle and Talia Hannappel each pitched in the game, but Hannappel was charged her first loss of the season in the circle.
Destiny Middleton, Skyler Brooks, Sara Jubas, Taylor Greene all registered a hit in the game, while Jones had two.

The Tar Heels head to Leesburg, Fla., for the Spring Games Tournament from Feb. 18-20. Carolina first faces the FAU Owls on Friday at 11 a.m.
