CHAPEL HILL - A big third quarter from the visitors put the No. 4 North Carolina men's lacrosse team in a hole as the fourth-ranked Tar Heels dropped their first game of the season, 20-8, to Ohio State Saturday afternoon. Â
Â
It is the first time since Apr. 8, 2006, that the Tar Heels have given up 20 goals. In that game, UNC lost 21-13 against Virginia. It is also the largest margin of defeat since Mar. 29, 1997, when the Tar Heels fell to Virginia 20-5.
Â
Chris Gray led North Carolina with three goals and four assists. Nicky Solomon and Jacob Kelly notched two goals, while Harrison Schertzinger added a goal and an assist.
Â
The first quarter was back and forth as both teams traded goals. The Buckeyes would score a goal with a minute to go in the first to tie it a two. Ohio State quickly scored back-to-back goals in the second quarter to go up 5-3. The Tar Heels would claw back as Jacob Kelly scored a last-second goal to make it a 6-5 Ohio State lead going into the break.Â
Â
Ohio State would record four of the next six goals to start the second half. The Buckeyes would then reel off seven unanswered goals to take a 17-7 lead with 9:50 left in the game. Jacob Kelly would score the Tar Heels last goal of the game before Ohio State scored three straight to end the game.
Â
North Carolina will return to action Wednesday, Feb. 23, to host Brown at Dorrance Field. Faceoff is slated for 1 p.m.
