Baseball Suffers First Loss Of The Season At ECU
February 27, 2022 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – After winning the first two games of their series against East Carolina, the Tar Heels were unable to complete the sweep and were shut out by the Pirates, 5-0, sending UNC (6-1) to its first loss of the season.
The game was originally slated for a 4 p.m., but rainy conditions pushed the start time back by two hours.
ECU (2-5) scored single runs in the second and fourth innings before plating two runs in the seventh and taking on an insurance run in the eighth.
The Tar Heels never seriously threatened to score until the ninth inning, loading the bases with one out. However, ECU reliever Skylar Brooks struck out the final two Carolina batters to end the game.
UNC starting pitcher Shaddon Peavyhouse was tagged with loss despite not yielding hit in 3.0 innings of work. He allowed two runs, just one earned, during his second outing as a Tar Heel. Carter Spivey picked up the win for ECU, holding Carolina to just two hits in 4.1 innings with seven strikeouts.
