Bacot Named ACC Player Of The Week For Third Time
February 28, 2022 | Men's Basketball
Tar Heel junior center Armando Bacot averaged 20.0 points and 16.5 rebounds and shot 81 percent from the floor in a pair of Carolina victories to earn ACC Player-of-the-Week honors for a league-best third time this season.
Bacot became the first Tar Heel ever to compile at least 20 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks in a game when he had 28 points, 18 boards and five blocks in UNC's 84-74 win at NC State on Saturday. Earlier in the week, he scored a dozen points, including a key basket with 90 seconds to play, and grabbed 15 rebounds in the Tar Heels' 80-73 win over Louisville.
His 18 rebounds in Raleigh tied Hall of Famer Billy Cunningham's UNC record for rebounds in a game against the Wolfpack, a mark Cunningham set in 1965.
Bacot is the first ACC player to win Player-of-the-Week honors three times this season; all three of his awards have come for his play against conference teams. He is the first Tar Heel to win three ACC Player-of-the-Week awards in a season since Luke Maye in 2018.
The Richmond, Va., native leads the ACC in field goal percentage (.591), rebounding (12.5), offensive rebounding (3.7) and double-doubles (22) and is sixth in scoring (16.3) and blocked shots (52).
No Tar Heel has ever had higher scoring and rebounding averages, field goal percentage and blocked shots in a single season and Wake Forest's Tim Duncan is the only ACC player ever with higher numbers in every category in one season (1996-97).
Bacot is averaging 14.3 rebounds in ACC games, the highest average since Duncan had 14.9 in 1996-97.
Bacot enters Monday's game against Syracuse third in the country in rebounding, tied for third in double-doubles, fifth in offensive boards and 13th in field goal percentage.
The 18-rebound game at NC State was his 23rd this season in double figures (which tied the UNC record) and 22nd double-double, which is one shy of tying the single-season Tar Heel record (Brice Johnson had 23 in 2015-16).
He was previously named ACC Player of the Week on January 10 and January 17.
The Tar Heels (21-8, 13-5 in the ACC) host Syracuse tonight at 7 p.m.
