Surging Tar Heels Earn ACC WBB Double Bye
February 28, 2022 | Women's Basketball
GREENSBORO, N.C. – After two years of playing in the first game of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, the North Carolina women's basketball team has earned the right to take its time getting to Greensboro this year. After finishing the regular season 23-5 overall and 13-5 in ACC play, the Tar Heels are the No. 4 seed in the 2022 event and received a double bye into Friday's quarterfinals.
No. 18 UNC opens play Friday at 11 a.m. against the winner of Thursday's second round game between fifth-seeded Virginia Tech and either No. 12 Syracuse or No. 13 Clemson.
A win would put Carolina in the ACC semifinals on Saturday at noon. The championship is set for Sunday at noon.
Carolina closed the regular season Sunday with a 74-46 homecourt win over Duke. That and NC State's win at Virginia Tech clinched the double bye for UNC. It's the first time the Tar Heels have gotten the pass into the quarterfinals since the tournament expanded to 15 teams in 2014.
The No. 4 seed is the best for Carolina since the previous year, when the Tar Heels were seeded third in the 2012-13 field. The Tar Heels haven't been higher than a No. 6 seed (2014 and 2015) since then.
With their 13-5 league record, the Tar Heels finished ACC play in a three-way tie for third place, along with Notre Dame and Virginia Tech. Tie-breakers determined the conference tournament seedings and put the Tar Heels in fourth, with Notre Dame the three seed and Virginia Tech the five. It's a significant jump for a team that was picked seventh in the preseason ACC polls of both the media and the ACC coaches.
Carolina leads all conference schools in most tournament titles with nine, the most recent in 2008. The Tar Heels are 62-35 all-time in ACC Tournament play.
