Men's Tennis Grabs Second Straight Big Road Win, 4-2 At No. 17 FSU
March 13, 2022 | Men's Tennis
TALLAHASSEE, FLA.—Brian Cernoch won a three-set clinching singles match as the No. 31-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team picked up its second consecutive huge road victory of the weekend, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at 17th-ranked Florida State.
Coming on the heels of Friday's 4-0 win at No. 24 Miami, Carolina's win over the Seminoles completed a strong road trip to the Sunshine State. Head coach Sam Paul's squad came up big with two wins over ranked foes on the road after facing adversity with injuries and inconsistency that had led to losses in four of five matches entering the weekend.
The Tar Heels improved to 8-5 this season, 3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. FSU fell to 10-5, 1-3.
Just like it had done in Friday's win over the Hurricanes in Coral Gables, Carolina got off to a hot start by winning the doubles point on Sunday against the Seminoles. The eighth-ranked Tar Heel duo of Cernoch and Mac Kiger disposed of Sebastian Arcila and Loris Pourroy, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles. Logan Zapp and Casey Kania, ranked No. 57 nationally in the most recent ITA ratings, clinched the point with a 6-2 win at No. 2 over Maks Silagy and Josh Karpenschif.
Florida State won the first singles decision of the day by beating Henry Lieberman at No. 4, but the Tar Heels responded with straight-set victories by Kiger (6-2, 7-5 over Richard Thorngoana at No. 3) and Anuj Watane (6-0, 7-5 over Alex Bulte at No. 6) to retake the lead at 3-1.
The Seminoles pulled within a point with a win over Zapp at No. 5 before Cernoch clinched the win with a three-set win at No. 2 singles over Andreja Petrovic 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.
Caroilna will return to action on Wednesday March 16 at Duke.
