Baseball Travels To Virginia For Weekend Series

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --- The Diamond Heels visit No. 11 Virginia this weekend for a three-game ACC Coastal Division series. Carolina has won seven of the last 10 games in the series dating back to 2018, which was the last time the Heels played in Charlottesville.

UNC enters the weekend with an 8-10 conference record, two games back of the Cavaliers which are 10-8 and alone in third place in the ACC's Coastal Division.

This weekend's series at UVA will be the Tar Heels' final ACC Coastal Division series of the season. UNC won its first two divisional series by sweeping Pittsburgh at home and winning two of three at Duke before losing its next three to Miami, Virginia Tech, and Georgia Tech. Carolina is 7-8 in the Coastal Division.

UNC's final three ACC series are against Atlantic Division foes NC State, Wake Forest and Florida State.

Davis Palermo tossed three shutout innings to earn his second save of the season Tuesday night as the Tar Heels snapped Campbell's 12-game winning streak with a 7-4 win in Chapel Hill. Palermo struck out five and surrendered just one hit. Hunter Stokely and Angel Zarate each drove in a pair of runs.

•Junior shortstop is one of the Diamond Heels' hottest hitters. He has hit safely in 11 consecutive games, batting .419 (18x43) with two home runs and 12 RBIs during his streak. He currently ranks second on the team in batting average (.345), slugging percentage (.547), on-base percentage (.427), runs scored (33), hits (51) and doubles (9). He needs three doubles to become the 10th player in school history with 50 career two-base hits.
•Sophomore designated hitter Alberto Osuna has driven in a run in eight consecutive games. He has 16 total RBIs in those eight games after collecting 17 RBIs in the first 25 games of the season.
 •After having his consecutive games reaching base streak stopped at 50 on April 3, Zarate has reached base in each of the last nine games, collecting a hit in each of those games. Since the start of the 2020 season, Zarate has reached base safely in 100 of 103 games played. He has hit safely in 35 of 37 games this season with a team-high 19 multi-hit games. Zarate currently ranks third in the ACC in hits (59) and doubles (14).

•North Carolina has hit multiple home runs in four of the past five games and seven of the last 10. The Heels hit eight total big flies against Georgia Tech last weekend, scoring 14 runs off the long ball.
•The Diamond Heels have hit 19 home runs in 12 games during the month of April. Osuna and Mac Horvath have each hit five home runs this month.
•Carolina has 49 extra base hits this month, including 27 doubles. Horvath leads the way with 10 extra base hits (5 doubles, 5 home runs) and Osuna has eight (5 home runs, 3 doubles).

•Palermo and Nik Pry combined 16 strikeouts in 9.2 innings pitched over the last three games with a combined ERA of 2.79. Palermo has eight strikeouts in his last 5.0 innings pitched, while Pry also has eight in his last 4.2 innings pitched.
