CHARLOTTE – The Diamond Heels surrendered a season-high 15 runs and yielded 14 hits and fell to South Carolina, 15-2, at Truist Field on Wednesday night.

With the loss, No. 22 North Carolina falls to 20-9, while the Gamecocks improved to 14-14.

South Carolina scored six runs across the first three innings and then tagged two more runs in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead before UNC plated a run.

Sophomore Johnny Castagnozzi belted his eighth home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth to get the Heels on the board. Danny Serretti singled up the middle in the seventh to drive home Angel Zarate for their second and final run of the evening.

Gage Gillian (1-2) made his second career start – first since the 2021 season finale against Texas Tech – and suffered his second loss of the season. He was one of nine pitcher the Heels used tonight. Aidan Hunter (5-2) earned the win, tossing 4.0 innings with six strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Gamecocks' center fielder Brandt Belk scored the game's first run on double play in the top of the first (UofSC 1, UNC 0).
Belk singled to right field to drive in two runs in the top of the second (UofSC 3, UNC 0).
Jack Mahoney hit a three-run home run in the top of the third inning (UofSC 6, UNC 0).
The Gamecocks scored twice in the top of the fifth with Kevin Madden coming home on a passed ball and Josiah Slightler scoring on a single by Colin Burgess (UofSC 8, UNC 0).
Castagnozzi got the Diamond Heels on the board with a solo home run in bottom of the sixth (UofSC 8, UNC 1).
Serretti singled up the middle in the bottom of the seventh to drive in Angel Zarate (UofSC 8, UNC 2).
South Carolina scored seven runs on seven hits in the top of the ninth inning (UofSC 15, UNC 2).
