Shoots Even Par on Front Nine in 2nd Round
Austin Greaser birdied the eighth and ninth holes for the second consecutive day at the Masters and shot a 5-over-par 77 in blustery conditions in the second round Friday at the Augusta National Golf Club.
Â
The University of North Carolina junior missed the cut by three shots after shooting 74-77 for a 151 total.
Â
Greaser finished within a stroke of 2015 Masters and U.S. Open champion Jordan Spieth and four-time major winner Brooks Koepka; tied 2020 Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele and Stewart Cink; and beat 2013 U.S. Open champion Justin Rose and 2019 U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland by a stroke, 2021 U.S. Amateur champion James Piot by five shots and 2020 U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau by five.
Â
Greaser tied Japan's Keita Nakajima at 7-over 151 for the lowest scores by amateurs in this year's Masters. None of the six amateurs in the 90-player field made the 36-hole cut.
"This week was amazing, special and filled with memories," says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto, who caddied at the Masters for Greaser. "I know Austin isn't satisfied with the result, but he has so much to be proud of. He tied for low score by an amateur at the Masters and also beat several past major championship winners. Most importantly, both of us learned so much. We are both exceptionally grateful for the opportunity to be at the Masters this week and now excited to get back together with our team. We have many things we want to accomplish together in the next two months."
Â
Greaser was 1 under on the par 5s, 1 over on the par 3s and 5 over on par-4 holes today.
Â
The Vandalia, Ohio, native made a five-foot birdie on the par-5 eighth hole and a 10-footer on nine to shoot even-par 36 on the front nine. Gusting, 20 mile per hour winds led to a double bogey on 11 and a 41 on the back nine.
Â
He made a 27-foot par putt on the first hole, a 13-footer for par on 10 and set up a short par on the par-3 sixth with a 63-foot putt to within two feet.
