UNC Headed For Indiana In ACC/Big Ten WBB Play
July 11, 2022 | Women's Basketball
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) — For the second year in a row, the North Carolina women's basketball team will hit the road in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, traveling to play at Indiana as part of the 2022 event's lineup, matchups for which were announced on Monday.
UNC takes on the Hoosiers on Dec. 1 on the second day of the two-day event. Game times and TV designations will be announced later.
The Carolina men's basketball team plays at Indiana the previous night, Nov. 30, in the men's version of the same event.
The ACC/Big Ten Challenge, now in its 15th season, takes place over two days early in the season. On Nov. 30, Pitt, Louisville and Boston College will host Big Ten opponents while Syracuse, Virginia and Wake Forest travel to Big Ten sites. Action continues on Dec. 1 with Duke, Miami, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech hosting games and NC State, FSU and Georgia Tech hitting the road, along with UNC.
Game times, as well as television and streaming coverage, will be announced at a later date. All ACC home games in the Challenge will be shown on either ACC Network (ACCN), ACC Network Extra (ACCNX), an ESPN network or the ACC's Regional Sports Networks (RSN), while Big Ten home games will appear on either Big Ten Network, Big Ten Network+ or an ESPN network.
UNC and Indiana have met just twice before in women's basketball. During the 1977-78 season, they met in Lexington, Ky., with Carolina winning 76-58 on Jan. 20, 1978. They met again in 1988-89 in Chapel Hill, with UNC winning 80-75 at Carmichael on Dec. 4, 1988. This will be the first time the teams have met in Bloomington.
Both the Tar Heels and Hoosiers were Sweet 16 teams in 2021-22.
In the 2021 event, known as the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, UNC won 82-76 at Minnesota. The Tar Heels return four starters and eight of the top nine scorers from that team, which finished the season 25-7.
The ACC owns a 10-1-3 all-time advantage in the Challenge, headlined by four outright titles in the last five years the event has been held. Additionally, the ACC stands a collective 104-74 against the Big Ten in the Challenge. Last year, the ACC won 10 of the 14 matchups and league teams combined to outscore the Big Ten by 107 points in victories.
Ten teams from the two conferences appear in ESPN's 2022-23 Way-Too-Early Top 25, including five from each league. No. 7 Louisville leads the way for the ACC, followed by No. 8 NC State, No. 9 Notre Dame, No. 11 Virginia Tech and No. 13 UNC. Iowa headlines the Big Ten rankings at No. 6 and is joined by No. 12 Indiana, No. 15 Ohio State, No. 18 Maryland and No. 22 Nebraska.
