CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina women's basketball team will tackle a challenging non-conference slate to open the 2022-23 season, facing at least four teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last season, including at least two that joined the Tar Heels in the 2022 Sweet 16.
UNC, which finished 25-7 last season and reached the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015, will open the season on Nov. 9 with a home game against Jackson State, the defending SWAC champion and an NCAA Tournament team in 2022. Carolina is set to play six nonconference games on its home court at Carmichael Arena, two at opponents' home gyms and three at neutral sites.
"Our non-conference schedule was created in an effort to challenge us against teams from all across the country, versus a variety of styles of play and in unique environments before the gauntlet of the ACC," said UNC coach Courtney Banghart, who is headed into her fourth season at the program's helm. "We will match up against five opponents from the Power 5 conferences, only one of which – TCU on Nov. 12th – will be at home. We are also thrilled to be included in two prestigious national tournaments: the Phil Knight Invitational in Portland over Thanksgiving and the inaugural Jumpman Invitational in Charlotte in December.
"We will host our first school day game this season, as well, as we bring local schools into Carmichael. The team is very eager to return to the energy of our fans in Carmichael."
The Tar Heels will enjoy the home court for their first three games, following up the Jackson State game by hosting TCU on Nov. 12 then South Carolina State on Nov. 16 for a midday game geared toward students from local elementary schools. (Schools seeking information should email Drew Read at drewread@live.unc.edu.)
After that UNC is away from Chapel Hill for four in a row, starting with a trip to play James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va., on Nov. 20 before heading west for Thanksgiving week. On Nov. 24, UNC opens play in the Phil Knight Invitational against Oregon, an NCAA Tournament team last season, in Portland, Ore.
On Nov. 27, Carolina will play either Iowa State, another 2022 Sweet 16 team, or Michigan State in the second game of the PKI.
After the Oregon trip, the Tar Heels hit the road again to face Indiana in ACC/Big Ten Challenge play on Dec. 1 in Bloomington, Ind. The Hoosiers are yet another UNC opponent that reached the Sweet 16 last season.
Back at Carmichael, UNC hosts UNCW on Dec. 7, Wofford on Dec. 11 and South Carolina-Upstate on Dec. 16.
UNC caps the nonconference slate on Dec. 20 in Charlotte, N.C., taking on Michigan, an Elite Eight team last season, in the Jumpman Invitational.
The Atlantic Coast Conference schedule for 2022-23 has not yet been announced.
Carolina returns four starters and eight of the top nine scorers from last year's squad.
