North Carolina junior Alyssa Ustby has been invited to participate in 2022 USA Basketball 3x3 Women's U23 National Team trials, taking place in Miami Aug. 5-8.
Ustby is part of an 11-player tryouts pool, from which a six-player team will be selected before the start of team training camp on Aug. 9. The U.S. men's and women's teams will then compete at the fifth edition of the FIBA 3x3 Nations League, starting play in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic, from Aug. 13-19.
"Alyssa is a rising star in women's basketball as she has relentlessly to added layers to her game," UNC coach Courtney Banghart said. "She plays hard on both sides of the ball and her scoring versatility and physicality will add tremendous value to the 3x3 game. She is so ready for this earned opportunity."
The women's national team training camp invitees bring a combination of USA Basketball (five-on-five and 3x3) and collegiate basketball experience. Joining Ustby in the trials are Joanne Allen-Taylor (Texas), Fran Belibi (Stanford), Quay Miller (Colorado), Aaliyah Moore (Texas), Shyanne Sellers (Maryland), Maddy Siegrist (Villanova), Celeste Taylor (Duke), Payton Verhulst (Louisville), Kayla Wells (Texas A&M) and Maddy Westbeld (Notre Dame).
Ustby, who earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference second-team honors as a sophomore, is one of four players making her USA Basketball debut at the trials. In 2021-22, she started all 32 games for the Tar Heels, averaging 12.9 points and a team-best 8.6 rebounds per game as the team went 25-7 and reached the Sweet 16.
