Garvanian’s Third Goal Lifts Men’s Soccer Past Notre Dame, 1-0
September 24, 2022 | Men's Soccer
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – A first-half penalty kick conversion by Milo Garvanian was all that was needed for the University of North Carolina men's soccer team to prevail, 1-0, over Notre Dame on Saturday night at Alumni Stadium for its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season.
The final result in Notre Dame, Indiana, was also the Tar Heels' first road win of the season as they improve to 4-2-2 (1-1-1). The Fighting Irish fall to 3-3-1 (1-2).
Carolina set the pace early with its high intensity during what proved to be a physical contest. Juan Caffaro and Garvanian both fired off shots in the opening eight minutes of play but their attempts at jumping out to an early lead sailed high and wide, respectively.
The Tar Heels were able to take a 1-0 lead they would not give up in the 30th minute after Akeim Clarke drew a foul inside the box. Garvanian capitalized on the opportunity with a shot to the bottom right, marking his team-high third goal and second successful penalty kick of the year.
Paddy Burns had a chance to even the score for Notre Dame in the 59th minute off a loose ball, but Andrew Cordes was able to get his glove on it for the stop. The Irish also had a good look off a corner four minutes later before a big defensive save by Tim Schels denied them the equalizer.
Despite Notre Dame increasing the pressure after the break, the defensive-minded style of play they have demonstrated throughout the season continued to bode well for the Tar Heels. UNC's back line limited the Irish to just one shot in the opening half and no shots on goal until nearly an hour in.
Between the posts, Cordes concluded the match with a pair of saves as Carolina picked up its third shutout of the 2022 campaign while Bryan Dowd had one for Notre Dame.
Carolina returns home to continue ACC action on Friday, Sept. 30 to host reigning national champion Clemson. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET at Dorrance Field.
