Volleyball Earns Dramatic Five Set Victory At Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Carolina volleyball team (9-4, 1-1 ACC) earned their first Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon, defeating Virginia (8-5, 0-2 ACC) in five sets. After dropping the first two sets of the match, the Tar Heels swept the next three to take the victory.
Mabrey Shaffmaster led the Carolina offense, tallying a team-best 17 kills, a team-best 11 digs and three blocks, her second straight double-double. The Newcastle, Ind., native, has a team-best five double-doubles on the season.
Freshman Liv Mogridge had a career-match with 13 kills on .600 hitting to go with a team-best five blocks. Aziah Buckner was the third Tar Heel in double-digits with 11 kills, while Anita Babic served a career-best four aces, matched her career-best of six kills and had 44 assists.
After hitting .133 in the first set and .156 in the second set, Carolina's offense stepped in up in the next three, averaging .417, while holding the Hoos to under .170.
The Tar Heels hit .296 in the match, their second-best hitting percentage of the season, while Virginia hit .205.
