North Carolina junior Alyssa Ustby has been named the Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Week, as announced on Tuesday by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).
Ustby averaged 16.5 points and 6.5 rebounds last week as the Tar Heels beat then-No. 13 Duke and Georgia Tech last week to stretch their winning streak to five in a row, all against Atlantic Coast Conference competition. Now ranked No. 15 nationally, UNC is 14-5 overall and 5-3 in ACC play heading into Thursday's game at Pitt.
Against the Blue Devils, who were undefeated in conference play, Ustby finished with 16 points on 8-11 shooting. She was 5-5 for 10 points in the third quarter, when Carolina moved ahead for good en route to a 61-56 win. The USBWA honor also noted that Ustby had been feeling ill earlier in the day on Thursday but rallied to play 39 minutes in the game.
On Sunday against Georgia Tech, she scored 17 points on 7-10 shooting and led UNC with eight rebounds. For the week Ustby shot 71.4 percent from the field and led the team with 3.0 assists, 2.5 blocks and 2.0 steals per game.
For the season, Ustby is averaging 13.8 ppg (third on the team and 10th in the ACC). She leads UNC in rebounding (9.0 per game, 5th in the ACC), field goal percentage (.524, 3rd in the ACC), blocks (1.3, 9th in the ACC) and steals (1.7, 14th in the ACC).
The USBWA selected Texas A&M forward Janiah Barker as the Tamika Catchings National Freshman of the Week and Middle Tennessee as the Team of the Week.
