Heels Hold A Long Scrrimmage On Friday
October 13, 2023 | Baseball
Chapel Hill, NC --Â The Tar Heels were orginally scheduled to scrimmage on both Thursday and Friday, but with rain in Saturday's forecast they instead held a 10 1/2-inning scrimmage on Friday, using all the pitchers who were tabbed to pitch on both days. The Blue squad fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first but rallied to take a 9-5 win over Navy.
Navy's four-run first was a sloppy affair. The first run scored on Alberto Osuna's infield single, then back-to-back runs scored on fielder's choices. The fourth run scored on a passed ball. Blue came back in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs. Vance Honeycutt plated a run with a double to left center, then Casey Cook drove in a run with a single to right.
Parker Haskin had a sacrifice fly to center in the second followed by Parks Harber's RBI-single to right in the third to knot the score at 4-4. Blue took the lead for good with a three-run fourth. Anthony Donofrio drove in a run with a single to left, Casey Cook hit a sacrifice fly to right and Parker Haskin ripped a run-scoring single to left.
Haskin laid down a nice safety-squeeze for a Blue run in the fifth, then Haskin homered to right center for a solo shot in the seventh to put Blue up 9-4. Navy scored their final run in the eighth as Alberto Osuna hit a solo homer to right center.
Honeycutt was 3-4 with one RBI Â and two runs scored, while Harber was 3-4 with two RBI. Cook was 2-5 with two RBI. Haskin was 1-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Osuna was 2-5 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead Navy.
Eleven pitchers saw action: Ben Peterson, Will Simmons, Matthew Matthijs, Hugh Collins, Harrison Lewis and Michael Colonna threw for Blue, while Jake Knapp, Mason Yokum, Olin Johnson, Boston Flannery and Connor Hegan pitched for Navy.
Simmons gave up one run in 3.1 innings on four hits while striking out three. Collins, Lewis and Colonna each retired the side in order in their one-inning stints. Nine of Colonna's ten pitches were strikes.
The Tar Heels will play host to Liberty next Friday at 6:00 pm.   Â
