Men’s Soccer Falls To Clemson In Penalty Kicks

CARY, N.C. - The North Carolina men's soccer program fell to Clemson in the 2023 ACC Tournament Final, as the Tigers were victorious after penalty kicks, 5-3.
How it Happened
• The Tar Heels outshot the Tigers 5-4 in the first half, with chances coming off of a series of set pieces around the 30th minute.
• Goalkeeper Andrew Cordes recorded two first half saves.
• Quenzi Huerman notched his 10th goal of the season in the 49th minute, redirecting a low cross from Andrew Czech into the bottom left corner.
• Ousmane Sylla scored the equalizer for Clemson in the 83rd minute, creating space for himself near the top of the box and curling a shot with his left foot into the top right corner.
• Cordes came up with a massive save in the 89th minute, sending the game to overtime.
• The championship matchup went to penalty kicks after a scoreless overtime period.
• Clemson converted all five of their penalty kicks. Sam Williams, Quenzi Huerman and Martin Vician converted for the Heels.

• Today was the third time the Tar Heels have gone to overtime in the ACC Final, as well as the second time the Tar Heels have gone to penalty kicks (against Duke in 2005).
• Quenzi Huerman's 10th goal of the season makes him the first double-digit goal scorer for Carolina since Alan Winn in 2017.
• Carolina has not conceded multiple goals in a game this season, making the third time in program history they enter the NCAA Tournament doing so (2012, 2018).
• Cordes recorded six saves for the Tar Heels.
• Riley Thomas, Charlie Harper, Parker O'Ferral, Matt Edwards, and Andrew Czech played the full 110 minutes of regulation and overtime.
