November 14, 2023 | Women's Basketball
UNC seniors Deja Kelly and Alyssa Ustby have been named to two watch lists for national player of the year honors. The Tar Heels are part of watch lists for both the John R. Wooden Award and the Naismith Trophy.
Â
Both were also named to positional award watch lists during the preseason, Kelly for the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Award and Ustby for the Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year Award.
Â
Kelly, a 5-8 guard forward from San Antonio, Texas, was recently ranked among ESPN's top 25 players in the nation. She's part of the watch lists for the second year in a row and has had a strong start to the season, averaging 16.0 points and 5.0 assists through two games.
Â
Ustby, a 6-1 guard/forward from Rochester, Minn., is also on the watch lists for the second year in a row. She is averaging a double-double through the first two games with 11.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.
Â
The No. 17 Tar Heels (2-0) are back in action Wednesday, hosting Hampton at Carmichael Arena for an 11 a.m. tipoff. The game is Field Trip Day, with 15 local schools attending.
