Men’s Soccer Advances To NCAA Elite Eight On Penalty Kicks

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men's soccer program (11-3-7) advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals on penalty kicks, Sunday evening at Dorrance Field.
How It Happened
• Teddy Baker opened the scoring for Hostra in the 18th minute, scoring on a header from the back post.
• Ahmad Al-Qaq responded quickly for the Tar Heels, sending home the equalizer in the 21st minute. Andrew Czech was able to beat his man down the wing, floating a cross into the box for Al-Qaq to head it home from close range.
• Ryan Carmichael got on the end of an errant pass from the Tar Heels in their defensive third, making it 2-1 in the 26th minute.
• The Tar Heels hit the crossbar twice from range in the second half, through long shots from Czech in the 46th minute and Al-Qaq in the 81st.
• Martin Vician netted the equalizer in the 86th minute, getting his head on the end of a Quenzi Huerman free kick.
• In PKs, Sam Williams, Huerman, Ernest Bawa, Vician, and Czech all found the back of the net.
• Andrew Cordes stopped Stefan Mason's penalty kick in the second round of the shootout.

• Carolina improves to 43-24-11 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
• The Tar Heels improve to 12-5-2 in the Round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament, and 6-1-1 under head coach Carlos Somoano.
• Tonight was the sixth-time Herman has assisted Vician this season, as well as the third time in the NCAA Tournament.
• Carolina holds an 8-3 record during penalty kicks in the NCAA Tournament.
• Cordes made four saves in regulation and overtime, with one save in the penalty shootout.
• Til Zinnhardt, Williams, Huerman, Riley Thomas, Matt Edwards, and Czech all played the full 110 minutes.
