February 15, 2023 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After trailing 5-0 early in the game, the Carolina softball team stormed back to score nine unanswered runs and defeat Elon 9-5 on Wednesday night at Anderson Stadium in its 2023 home opener.
Isabela Emerling earned her first collegiate hit in a big way in the win. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and the bases loaded, the redshirt freshman hit a four-run home run to give the Tar Heels the walk-off victory. It was Carolina's first grand slam since Lexi Godwin hit one against Virginia on April 7, 2019.
Kiersten Licea was also hot at the plate for Carolina, going 3-of-3 from the plate, matching her career-best, with two RBIs and a home run, while plating a team-best three runs.
In the circle, Bailey McCachren (2-0) shined, earning her second victory of the season. Allowing just four hits in 4.2 innings, the junior pitcher shutout the Phoenix in the last four innings with three strikeouts. She has now pitched 12.1 innings to open her Carolina career without allowing an earned run.
Annie Kate Dalton tallied her second sacrifice fly of the season in the fifth, followed by a Skyler Brooks two-RBI base hit, helping the Tar Heels tie the game up with five straight runs.
