February 3, 2023 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina gymnastics team will hit the road for just the second time this season as it travels to Raleigh for a tri-meet with host NC State and Western Michigan. Action will begin at 4 p.m. ET inside the James T. Valvano Arena at William Neal Reynolds Coliseum.
The meet will be aired on ACCNX with Rachel Garland and Sydney Snead on call.
Carolina checked in at No. 27 in the latest Road to Nationals poll after four weeks of competition, its highest ranking of the regular season. The Tar Heels also clocked in at No. 27 in the national preseason poll – their highest preseason ranking since 2007 – in addition to being tabbed No. 1 in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League.
The Tar Heels currently sit at 5-2 following a win over George Washington on Jan. 28. UNC recorded its highest team score of the year at 196.325, improving its total score each meet since the season opener. The program, which saw its highest mark this season on floor (49.350), has nine rotations of 49.000+, which is the second-most in the EAGL.
Kaya Forbes was named the EAGL Co-Rookie of the Week on Feb. 1, the first weekly accolade of the freshman's career. Forbes, who has not scored lower than 9.800 on any event this season, had a team-high 9.850 on vault and a career-high 9.900 on floor against George Washington. She is also one of only four freshmen in the EAGL to have recorded at least one mark of 9.900 this season.
Forbes' award marked the third weekly honor for Carolina this season as sophomores Lali Dekanoidze and Julia Knower were named the EAGL Specialist of the Week and Gymnast of the Week, respectively, on Jan. 18.
Dekanoidze has impressed on bars all season, scoring back-to-back 9.975s to become UNC's outright program record holder on the event. She is one of only nine gymnasts in the nation who has scored a 9.975+ on bars and is one of only five who has done it twice.
Knower is on a three-meet streak of winning the all-around title with her highest score of the season being a career-best 39.450 on Jan. 9 to move to No. 8 all-time in program history. Her floor score of 9.950 against the Buff & Blue was also a career-high and moved to No. 7 in the record book.
