CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina will open NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament play Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, facing either Purdue or St. John's. It's the 30th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and third in a row under fourth-year head coach Courtney Banghart.
The Tar Heels are seeded sixth in the Seattle 3 Region. The Boilermakers and Red Storm face off in Columbus on Thursday with the winner taking on UNC.
"We know all the teams are good in March," Banghart said. "They'll present unique challenges that we've got to wrap our arms around, but we're just excited to get underway."
The Tar Heels (21-10) are coming off a Sweet 16 appearance in 2022, the 18th in school history and first since 2015. They're 49-28 all-time in NCAA play, with a national championship in 1994 and Final Fours in 1994, 2006 and 2007.
UNC is 6-0 all-time against St. John's but last faced the Red Storm in the 2009-10 season. Carolina's most-recent matchup with Purdue was a year earlier, in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Purdue won that matchup in Chattanooga, Tenn., but UNC leads the overall series 4-2, including a win in the 1994 NCAA semifinals on the way to the national championship.
The team watched the selection show Sunday evening at Top of the Hill restaurant in downtown Chapel Hill, with a full house of families and supporters there. "It's really awesome to have so many people here excited about what we're doing," Banghart said.
Saturday's game is set for 4 p.m. and will air on ESPN. For tickets, click here.
