O'Connor Advances To NCAA Final; Kane And McNeil Collect All-America Honors

Tulsa, Okla. – Austin O'Connor advanced to the 157-pound finals, as Gavin Kane and Lachlan McNeil joined him garnering All-America finals on day two of the 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla.
At 125, Jack Wagner battled tough in the opening period, however the graduate student would ultimately fall short in the second period to No. 24 Nick Babin of Columbia by fall. For the tournament, Wagner would finish with a 1-2 mark for the Tar Heels.
In the quarterfinal round of the championship bracket, redshirt-freshman McNeil would drop a close match to No. 2 Andrew Alirez of Northern Colorado, 6-4. In the consolation bracket, McNeil would defeat Malyke Hines of Lehigh (5-2 decision) and Dylan D'Emilio of Ohio State (8-2 decision) to secure his All-America recognition.
Moving to 157-pounds, the top seeded O'Connor continued to cruise in Tulsa this weekend, defeating ninth-ranked Will Lewan of Michigan by major decision, 10-2. In the evening, O'Connor won in dramatic fashion over fifth-seeded Josh Humphreys of Lehigh by decision, 4-3, to advance to the 157-pound finals tomorrow night.
Kane had himself a busy morning session, defeating No. 12 Abe Assad from Iowa by decision, 4-3, rounding out the opening half of the day with a 3-0 victory against No. 19 Jacob Nolan of Binghamton. In the nightcap, Kane would defeat Hunter Bolen of Virginia Tech (4-3 decision) to claim All-America honors, before falling short against Kaleb Romero of Ohio State (11-3 major decision).
At 197, Max Shaw would drop his second round consolation matchup by decision, 8-3, to round out his weekend with a 1-2 record.
