No. 3 Women’s Lacrosse Suffers Setback At No. 12 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – No. 3 University of North Carolina women's lacrosse suffered a 16-12 loss at No. 12 Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon at the Loftus Sports Center in South Bend, Indiana.
The Tar Heels are now 9-2 on the year and 5-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference action while the Fighting Irish improve to 8-3 (4-2).

How It Happened
- Carolina struggled at the start to get looks on cage with Notre Dame jumping out to a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- Marissa White got her second goal of the day off a rebound at the beginning of the second frame, but the Irish went on a 4-1 run to hold a 9-4 edge at the half.
- Coming out of the break, Alyssa Long's second goal sparked a 4-0 run for the Tar Heels with Caitlyn Wurzburger having two.
- UNC, which took advantage of ND's physical play as three of its four unanswered goals came off converted eight-meter attempts, trailed 12-9 after 45 minutes.
- Back-to-back goals from Caroline Godine and Lauren Figura in the fourth put UNC back within three, but Notre Dame hung on for the win.
- Notre Dame committed 47 fouls and drew three yellow cards. UNC was able to capitalize on drawing fouls inside the eight-meter as six of its goals were off free positions.
- The Tar Heels out-shot the Fighting Irish 14-11 in the second half, but the home team had a 29-24 advantage during the entire 60 minutes.
- Wurzburger had a team-high four points followed by Godine with three.
- Olivia Dirks led UNC with five draw controls while Mackenzie Rich had a game-high two ground balls.
- Rich and Julia Dorsey both had two caused turnovers.
- With two assists today, Wurzburger is now one away from being tied for seventh all-time in UNC history with 77 career assists.
- White and Wurzburger have scored at least one goal in every contest this year.
- Godine has tallied two or more points in each of the last seven contests.
- UNC has scored double-figure goals 67 times in its last 70 games.
- Carolina has gone 74-7 in its last 81 games against ACC opponents.
- Dating back to Feb. 12, 2022, the Tar Heels are 21-2 against ranked teams.
