Baseball Uses Seven-Run First To Beat Queens
April 11, 2023 | Baseball
The Tar Heels scored all 10 of their runs in the first three innings, scoring seven runs in the first and three in the third, collecting 10 of their 11 hits across those frames.
"We learned a valuable lesson in there tonight," UNC head coach Scott Forbes said. "You jump out 10-0 and start coasting, and the next thing you know, the tying run is at the plate.
"I thought we had a chance to deliver a knockout punch, and after we went up 10-0, our at-bats, for the most part, were pretty stubborn. This was one of the few times this season that we had some bad at-bats collectively, one through nine, and went away from what we've been so good at, and that's having a great approach."
UNC (23-10) sent 11 men to the plate in its seven-run first inning, with each of the first six batters reaching safely. Vance Honeycutt drew a bases loaded walk, and Tomas Frick and Hunter Stokely followed with consecutive two-run doubles before Queens (6-26) recorded an out and put the Tar Heels out in front 5-0.
Alvarez singled to drive home Stokely and then scored on a ground out by Casey Cook as North Carolina posted its highest first inning run total since the 2022 Chapel Hill Regional.
Alvarez made it 10-0 in the third with his second home run of the season.
Stokely collected a pair of doubles and drove in two. Frick also drove home two runs, while Alvarez and Cook also had two hits.
Dalton Pence made his second start of the season and struck out two in his lone inning of work.
Cameron Padgett (2-0) was the first of 10 relievers to pitch and earned the victory, striking out three in 2.0 innings.
"Cam has been throwing better and better," Forbes said. "His velocity is starting to go up. Keep your eye on Padgett. He's a freshman that keeps coming. He throws a ton of strikes, and when you have a guy with that good command, you feel good about what you're seeing."
The Royals pushed across two runs in the sixth and then a single run in the seventh and eighth inning before loading the bases and bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs in the ninth.
Right-handed reliever Kevin Eaise was summoned to get the final out and struck out Nick Melton to end the game and record his fourth save.
Queens' starter Justin Offschanka (0-4) pitched just one inning, allowing seven runs on six hits with two walks.
The Diamond Heels open a three-game ACC Coastal Division series against Miami on Thursday, April 13, at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on ACC Network.
