Baseball Hosting Three-Game Series Against Miami

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 13 North Carolina Tar Heels open a three-game ACC Coastal Division baseball series against the Miami Hurricanes at Boshamer Stadium on Thursday.

The Tar Heels enter the game with an overall record of 23-10 and 8-5 in the ACC, while the Hurricanes own an overall record of 20-12 with an 8-7 conference ledger. UNC leads by Miami by one game for second place in the ACC's Coastal Division.

North Carolina posted a 10-6 win over Queens University at home Tuesday night, scoring seven runs in the first inning. It was the 11th time the Tar Heels scored double digit runs in a game this season. Patrick Alvarez drove in four runs, highlighted by a three-run home run in the third inning.

Alvarez leads the Tar Heels with a .355 batting average, followed by Jackson Van De Brake, who is hitting .345.

Van De Brake owns a team-best 1.117 OPS with Mac Horvath (1.089), Hunter Stokely (1.033) and Tomas Frick (1.033) each posting an OPS over 1.000. Frick and Horvath rank one and two on the team in hits, doubles and RBIs. Horvath's 13 home runs are tops on the squad.

Miami hasn't played since getting swept on the road by Virginia last weekend. The Hurricanes are 2-9 on the road, but eight of those nine losses were to top-10 teams. In addition to getting swept by No. 7 Virginia, they were also swept by No. 2 Wake Forest and lost two of three at No. 6 Florida.

The Hurricanes lead the ACC with 62 home runs and have recorded 18 multi-homer performances. Miami has eight players with five or more home runs led by catcher Carlos Perez with eight.

More than 50 percent of the Hurricanes' runs (120-of-237) this season have come via the home run.

Miami leads the overall series 44-36-1, but the Tar Heels have the advantage in Chapel Hill. UNC has won 20 of 34 games played at Boshamer Stadium and have won three straight series at home over the Hurricanes.

BACK AT THE BOSH
After playing seven consecutive games on the road, North Carolina returned home Tuesday night and opened a nine-game homestand with a win over Queens University of Charlotte, 10-6. Following this weekend's series against Miami, the homestand continues with a midweek game against Charlotte (April 18) followed by a three-game series with No. 11 Boston College (April 21-23) and a midweek contest versus UNCW (April 25). The Tar Heels 17-6 at home this season with a record of 16-2 against unranked teams.
THURSDAY NIGHT BASEBALL
North Carolina is playing its third of five Thursday-Saturday ACC series this weekend. UNC defeated Georgia Tech in Atlanta a week ago and took down Duke in Chapel in its first Thursday night game during the third weekend of the season. The next time the Tar Heels will play on Thursday will be May 10 at home against NC State as part of the ACC Network's Thursday Night Baseball package. UNC's fifth and final Thursday night game will be during the final weekend of the regular season at Clemson.

North Carolina is 10-0 this season when it scores five runs in any inning of a game this season and 0-4 when it yields five or more runs in an inning, and 2-7 when it allows four or more runs in an inning.

Prior to the series opener against Georgia Tech, UNC head coach Scott Forbes made a strategic lineup change by moving Casey Cook into the leadoff spot and Vance Honeycutt in the cleanup position. Cook led off with a single twice in those four games, getting a base knock in the finale at Georgia Tech and last time out versus Queens. Honeycutt went 4-for-14 at the cleanup spot the previous four games, driving home four runs, scoring three and drawing five walks.
