Men's Tennis Beats No. 19 Seminoles, 4-1
April 14, 2023 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Sixteenth-ranked North Carolina picked up a big ACC men's tennis win on Friday at the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Courts, beating Florida State, 4-1.
With the victory, Carolina improved to 16-7 overall and 8-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season. The Tar Heels moved into a fourth-place tie in the ACC standings with the 19th-ranked Seminoles, who fell to 17-6, 8-3. Virginia leads the conference at 10-0, followed by 10-1 Duke, 9-3 NC State and 8-3 Carolina and FSU.
Earlier in the day, UNC Athletics dedicated the beautiful, new Chewning Tennis Center, its new outdoor court facility named for Tom and Nancy Chewning. Friday's match between Carolina and the Seminoles moved inside due to rain and storms in the vicinity. The start of the match was delayed by an hour and 40 minutes as officials attempted to dry the outdoor courts before ultimately deciding to play indoors.
The Tar Heels grabbed the doubles point to start the evening. Ryan Seggerman and Casey Kania, ranked 17th this week by the ITA, cruised to a 6-2 win at No. 1 over Loris Pourroy and Alex Bulte. Minutes later, FSU's Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif beat 36th-ranked Brian Cernoch and Benjamin Kittay, 6-3, at No. 2.
Carolina's Will Jansen and Karl Poling clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Barnaby Smith and Maks Silagy at the No. 3 slot.
Jansen and Poling both breezed in their singles matches, giving the Tar Heels a 3-0 advantage. Jansen beat No. 114 Youcef Rihane by a 6-2, 6-3 score at No. 3 shortly before Poling beat Dous-Karpenschif, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4.
Cornut-Chauvinc, ranked fourth in the nation, beat No. 45 Cernoch, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles to get the Seminoles on the scoreboard, but Seggerman (ranked No. 43) downed Pourroy at No. 2, 6-4, 6-3, to clinch the victory.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Sunday at noon against Miami. It will be Senior Day for departing Tar Heel seniors and graduate students playing in their final home regular season matches.
