Baseball Unable To Avoid BC Sweep
April 23, 2023 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Joe Vetrano scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to spark a three-run seventh inning, and No. 20 Boston College completed a three-game sweep of No. 18 North Carolina with a 6-2 win on Sunday.
The Tar Heels (25-15, 9-10 ACC) have lost five of their last eight games, but that will not deter head coach Scott Forbes.
"Sometimes you have a team that you might have to rip them here and there, and sometimes you have a team that you might have to do the opposite and go to the drawing board," Forbes said.
"If you have a team like this that practices hard, gives effort every single day, great locker room, you've got to figure that out as a coach. I take a lot of pride in hard work. We're going back to the drawing board tomorrow, and we're going back to work and try to have better results."
Adonys Guzman and Vince Cimini had an RBI single in the decisive inning before Travis Honeyman homered in the eighth.
Vetrano finished with three of the Eagles' 11 hits, with Honeyman, Leary, and Cimini recording two base knocks apiece.
Eric Schroeder (5-2) pitched three hitless innings out of the bullpen after the Tar Heels scored two runs off starter John West, who surrendered five hits in 4.0 innings.
UNC righty Jake Knapp avoided extensive damage in the first, allowing just one run after the Eagles loaded the bases with one out. Leary drove in a run with a single, but Knapp induced back-to-back pop-ups to end the inning.
He worked around back-to-back hits in the second and a leadoff walk in the third before retiring the Eagles (27-12, 12-9) in order in the fourth. He exited with one out in the fifth.
"Knapp was just pitching off guts and gave us a legitimate chance to win," Forbes said.
Hunter Stokely put the Tar Heels ahead in the fourth with a two-run single to center field after Vance Honeycutt led off with a bunt single, and Tomas Frick followed with a double.
Stokely collected his fourth three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Honeycutt recorded two hits.
Cameron Padgett (2-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing the first two men he faced in the seventh to reach base.
The Tar Heels will wrap up their nine-game homestand Tuesday, April 25, against UNCW at 6 p.m.
