Tar Heel Earns Exemption By Peer Vote At Palmer Cup
David Ford, a rising junior at the University of North Carolina, earned an exemption into the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational, the annual PGA Tour tournament at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando, Fla., by virtue of a vote of his peers at the recently-concluded Arnold Palmer Cup.
Ford, the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year and a first-team All-America, was one of 12 men's and 12 women's players that helped Team USA defeat an international squad of amateurs, 32-28, at the Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pa., June 8-10.
UNC senior Austin Greaser and associate head coach Matt Clark were also members of the USA team.
Beginning in 2017, the winning team in the Palmer Cup has voted for one individual to receive an exemption to play in the Arnold Palmer Invitational based on the teammate who best represents the legacy and values of the golf legend.
Previous exemptions were extended to Ludvig Aberg, Sam Bennett, Matthias Schmid, Chun An, Justin Suh and Collin Morikawa.
"It is an honor to be voted the recipient of the exemption for the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational," says Ford. "Not only is it special to be voted by my peers, but it's also an amazing opportunity to play against the best players in the world in a prestigious PGA event next March."
Kurt Kitayama won the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational, a top destination on the PGA Tour each season. Tiger Woods is an eight-time champion, and recent winners include Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.
