Kelly Competing For AmeriCup Spot
June 20, 2023 | Women's Basketball
North Carolina's Deja Kelly is headed for Colorado this week to compete for a spot on the USA Women's AmeriCup Team. Trials start on Wednesday in Colorado Springs. The Tar Heel guard, a rising senior, is one of six players vying for four remaining spots on the 12-player roster.
Kelly was set to try out for this team in May but had to withdraw from trials while continuing to recover from an injury she suffered at the end of the Tar Heels' season. Eight players were selected during that training camp. Five from the camp were selected to return to continue to compete for spots. Kelly will join the process as the final candidate.
Those already selected for the team are Lauren Betts (UCLA), Rickea Jackson (Tennessee), Raven Johnson (South Carolina), Rayah Marshall (Southern California), Charisma Osborne (UCLA), Laila Phelia (Michigan), Angel Reese (LSU) and Jewel Spear (Tennessee).
All athletes are selected by the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee, in collaboration with the Jennifer Rizzotti, chair of the USA Basketball Women's National Team Committee.
The team is coached by Kamie Ethridge (Washington State University), Aaron Johnston (South Dakota State University) and Katrina Merriweather (University of Cincinnati).
The United States will face Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and Venezuela as part of Group A. The U.S. opens pool play against Venezuela on July 1, followed by Argentina on July 2 and Brazil on July 4 with all three games tipping off at 4:40 p.m. ET. The USA closes pool play facing Cuba on July 5 at 2:10 p.m. ET.
If the USA advances, quarterfinals are scheduled for July 7 followed by semifinals on July 8 and the medal games on July 9. Game times and broadcast information will be announced later.
Since the event's inception in 1989, the United States has captured four Women's AmeriCup gold medals, including titles in 2019 and 2021. In addition to the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela will participate in the 2023 FIBA Women's AmeriCup.
