Six Student-Athletes Inducted Into Phi Beta Kappa In 2022-23

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Six Tar Heel student-athletes were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa honorary society during the 2022-23, recognizing their outstanding academic achievement.
Elizabeth Culton (gymnastics), Alex Mays (men's swimming and diving), Libby Moore (women's soccer) were fall 2022 inductees. Jessica Judge (rowing), Rob Landry (men's basketball) and Henry Shugart (men's fencing) were inducted in the spring.
Culton, Judge, Mays, Moore and Shugart all graduated in May, while Landry is a rising senior.
Culton is from Durham and majored in psychology.
Judge is from Cary and majored in information science with a statistics and analytics minor.
Landry is from Greensboro, N.C., and is majoring in biochemistry and business administration with a minor in biology.
Mays is from Maryville, Tenn., and majored in neuroscience with minors in chemistry and medical anthropology.
Moore is from Wilmington, N.C., and majored in global studies with minors in Spanish for the professions and neuroscience.
Shugart is from Denver, Colo., and majored in statistics & analytics and mathematics with a minor in data science.
A total of 260 UNC students were inducted in the fall, and 291 were inducted in the spring.
Less than one percent of all college students qualify for acceptance. Past and present Phi Beta Kappa members from across the country have included 17 American presidents, 42 U.S. Supreme Court Justices and more than 150 Nobel Laureates.
Phi Beta Kappa membership is open to undergraduates in the college and professional degree programs who meet stringent eligibility requirements. A student who has completed 75 hours of course work in the liberal arts and sciences with a GPA of 3.85 or better (on a 4-point scale) is eligible for membership. Also eligible is any student who has completed 105 hours of course work in the liberal arts and sciences with a 3.75 GPA. Grades earned at other universities are not considered.
Phi Beta Kappa has 293 chapters nationwide. UNC's chapter, Alpha of North Carolina, was founded in 1904 and is the oldest of eight chapters in the state.
