Ahmed Hamdy Refaee Named Fencing Assistant Coach

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Hamdy Refaee has joined the North Carolina fencing program as an assistant coach, head coach Matt Jednak announced Friday.
"We are very excited to have Hamdy join our family," Jednak said. "He is not only an amazing coach, but an amazing person. His character and energy show that he has always been a Tar Heel. Our team is going to benefit greatly from all the experiences he brings with him. I personally feel very blessed that he is with us."
For the past two years, Refaee has worked at the Tim Morehouse Fencing Club, instructing group and private lessons to high school students as well as Olympic-level fencers in Stamford, Ct.
Refaee previously worked as an assistant fencing coach at the US Air Force Academy from 2018-2021. As the saber coach, Refaee had a hand in helping senior Leanne Singleton-Comfort claim her second Western Fencing Conference women's saber title by going a perfect 10-0 in head-to-head bouts. The Falcons produced a school-record five USFCA All-Americans, in addition 10 all-region honorees.
Refaee was the Saber coach for the Egyptian National Team from 2015-16 and previously in 2008-09. During his time with the program, the team won the African Championships in individual and team competition in 2015 and 2016. Egypt also earned a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in 2016 and a World Cup junior team fourth place finish in 2016.
Refaee was also the head coach and saber coach at Premier Fencing Club in Monmouth Junction, N.J. from 2011-2018. Prior to his time at Premier fencing, he coached at New Jersey Fencing Alliance in Maplewood, N.J., from 2009-10.
Refaee has also been a licensed USA Fencing National Referee since 2004.
In addition to coaching and referee duties, Refaee has experience conducting numerous fencing clinics, including with USA Fencing and the Hungarian Fencing Federation.
Refaee is a 2002 graduate of Alexandria University (Alexandria, Egypt) where he earned a bachelor's degree in physical education.
