September 15, 2023 | Fencing
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Highlighted by the second-annual Tar Heel Duals on Feb. 10 in Carmichael Arena, the North Carolina fencing team and head coach Matt Jednak announced its schedule for the 2023-2024Â season on Friday.
The young roster, featuring 14 freshmen, will kick off their season against some of the top programs in the country at the Garrett Open for individual competition, hosted by Penn State on Oct. 21-22.Â
"We met a lot of people that we could tell were Tar Heels when just talking to them," head coach Matt Jednak said.
"We're pushing for better and higher results every year. I think that the squad that we're bringing in this year is the next step in that direction."
After a break from collegiate competition at the October NAC (North American Cup), dual meets will begin at the Western Invitational hosted by Air Force on Nov. 4-5.
"The Western Invitational has been great in the past." Jednak said. "It's been a great way to start off the season with a really high level of competition. It sets the tone for the team to be ready for the rest of the season."
January will see the Tar Heels travel to Pennsylvania for three straight away meets, competing at Penn State, Temple and Penn. Following the Tar Heel Duals and US Junior Olympics, North Carolina will travel to South Bend, Ind. for the ACC Championships on Feb. 24-25.Â
Those who qualify will end their season back in Columbus, Ohio, for the NCAA Championships on March 21-24.Â
