CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC women's basketball seniors Deja Kelly and Alyssa Ustby will serve as team captains for the 2023-24 season, coach Courtney Banghart announced on Friday.
"I am honored to name Alyssa and Deja our captains for the season ahead," Banghart said. "I remember sitting with them almost four years ago to go over their goals, and it's been quite a journey watching them achieve so much. Both women have shown an undeniable and consistent commitment to their game and to this program and both have grown exponentially in their time in the Carolina blue.
"They are ready to lead. They have put their all into this program and love the people in it. Lys and DK know that they have a special group along with them, and I'm confident they will give this responsibility their very best."
Kelly is a guard from San Antonio, Texas, and is majoring in broadcast journalism. Ustby is a guard/forward from Rochester, Minn., and is majoring in PR/advertising with a minor in business.
Both players earned first -team All-ACC and honorable mention All-America honors last season as third-year starters.
"My only goal is to lead this team forward," Kelly said. "We all have common goals, so I'm dedicated to help lead us to achieve those. I will always bring my competitive piece to the whole and will help push everyone daily to bring out their best. I'm so excited for this upcoming year with this group."
"My goal is to challenge my teammates to reach their potential," Ustby said. "This is a talented group of girls that I would go to war with every single day. We have big goals to accomplish and I'm committed to giving my best for the success of the team."
