January 17, 2024 | Men's Tennis
Once again one of the top teams in the nation, the University of North Carolina men's tennis team will begin its 2024 season with a home doubleheader on Thursday in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels will host Campbell (4 p.m.) and North Carolina Central (7 p.m.) on the Cone-Kenfield indoor courts of the Chewning Tennis Center on Thursday.
Carolina opens the dual match portion of its 2024 season ranked No. 13 nationally as one of six Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the latest ITA poll, released on Wednesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Longtime head coach Sam Paul returns an experienced group of seven lettermen from the 2023 team, including graduate students Karl Poling and Anuj Watane and seniors Peter Murphy and Logan Zapp. Also back are junior Casey Kania and sophomores Will Jansen and Casey Kania.
A quintet of newcomers includes graduate transfers Will Peters (Princeton) and Phillip Jordan (UC Santa Barbara), sophomore Dennis Perumov and freshmen Patrick Schoen and Anthony Wright.
A season ago, The Tar Heels tied for third place in the ACC regular season standings and hosted NCAA Championship first- and second-round matches for the ninth consecutive year. Carolina advanced to the NCAA Championship round of 16 for the ninth consecutive time in 2023.
Following Thursday's doubleheader, UNC will play its first road match of the season when it visits 12th-ranked Columbia on Sunday in New York, N.Y.
