CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 7 North Carolina (8-2-4, 3-2-1 ACC) dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 4 Pitt (11-3, 5-1 ACC) in a top-10 clash on Saturday night at Dorrance Field.
How It Happened
● Andrew Cordes came up with a big reactive save in the 33rd minute to keep Pitt off the board in what proved to be a battle in the midfield in the opening half.
● The Tar Heels' defense stood tall by holding the Panthers to just three shots in the first half as both teams went into the break scoreless.
● UNC came out aggressive, firing off back-to-back shots within the first four minutes of the second half that were ultimately denied by the Pitt keeper.
● The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute when Arnau Vilamitjana sent in a header off Guilherme Feitosa's corner.
● Carolina quickly responded with a converted penalty kick three minutes later after VAR review confirmed a handball. Stepping up to the spot, Sam Williams drove in a low shot to the center of the net for the equalizer.
● Andres Cardenas had a good look with four minutes left on the clock, but his strike from distance forced a diving save from the Pitt keeper who knocked it out.
● Vilamitjana found another one late to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead in the 88th minute, which stood to be the final score.
