Faasse A Finalist For Women's Soccer Honda Sport Award
December 13, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Coming off a national championship as the nation's leading goal scorer, North Carolina standout Kate Faasse has been named a finalist for the prestigious 2024-25 Honda Sport Award for Women's Soccer.Â
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the Collegiate Women Sports Awards for the past 49 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics." The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the distinguished 2025 Honda Cup.
Faasse is the first Tar Heel to be named a Honda Award finalist since Emily Fox in 2019-20. Including Faasse, 19 UNC players have been a finalist a combined 26 times. She looks to become the first Tar Heel to win the honor since Crystal Dunn in 2012-13. Twelve Carolina players have won the award 13 times with Mia Hamm winning in back-to-back years in 1992-94.Â
Faasse joins Duke's Maggie Graham, Florida State's Taylor Huff and Wake Forest's Caiya Hanks as the four finalists who were selected by a panel of experts and coaches. The Honda Sport Award winner is determined after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.Â
No stranger to awards this year, Faasse was tabbed to the All-America First Team, All-Atlantic Region First Team, All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team and ACC All-Tournament Team. She was also recently selected as a finalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy, the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I Soccer.
A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Faasse had four goals and three assists during the NCAA Tournament to help North Carolina earn its 23rd national championship and first since 2012. She netted the game-winner in the quarterfinals and semifinals while dishing out the game-winning assist in the third round.  Â
After her tally in the College Cup semifinals, Faasse became the nation's leading scorer with 20 goals. Her 44 points leads the ACC and is tied for second in the country. She also recorded an NCAA-leading eight game-winning goals.
Her 44 points and 20 goals are the most by a Tar Heel in a single season since Casey Nogueria had 58 and 25, respectively, in 2008. She is the eighth Carolina player to record 40+ points in one year since the turn of the century.
Three of her five braces on the year came during the postseason with one during the NCAA Tournament. She is the first UNC player to have 3+ braces in one season since Alessia Russo had five in 2019. In fact, only three Tar Heels have had 3+ braces in a single season in the last decade: Faasse (5, 2024), Russo (5, 2019) and Bridgette Andrzejewski (4, 2016).
Faasse surpassed her point total from her freshman (6) and sophomore (7) season combined just 10 games into the 2024 campaign. She started all 27 games this season and led all field players with 2,300 minutes.
