December 24, 2024 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Coming off back-to-back double-digit outings and setting a new career-high in made three's, Lanie Grant has been named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Tamika Catchings Freshman of the Week.
Grant, who reclassified this off-season to forgo her senior year of high school to join the Tar Heels has made an immediate impact her first season in Chapel Hill. This past week, Grant recorded back-to-back games in double-figure scoring for the first time in her career in games against Florida and Norfolk State.
At the Jumpman Invitational against the Gators in Charlotte, Grant tallied 13 points while shooting 5-of-10 from the field. She also snagged a team-best two steals in the 77-57 win over Florida and grabbed a career-high four rebounds.
In the non-conference finale against Norfolk State, Grant's hot streak continued as the freshman drained a career-high four three's while going 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. She tied her career-best with 15 points, hitting 6-of-8 shots from the floor. Off the glass, she matched her previous high with four rebounds. Led by Grant, the Tar Heels picked up their 12thnon-conference win for the most in a single season since the 2013-14 campaign.
Grant is currently one of eight averaging at least 5.0 points per game, as through 14 appearances the Midlothian, Va., native averages 6.0 points per outing along with 1.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists.
The Tar Heels return to action following the holidays with a trip to Miami on Dec. 29, at 4 p.m. ET. The tilt against the Hurricanes will air on ACC Network.
