Calder Tapped For Assistant Coaches Hall Of Fame
March 14, 2024 | Women's Basketball
Andrew Calder, who spent 33 years as a part of the UNC women's basketball coaching staff, has been selected for the A STEP UP Assistant Coaches Hall of Fame. He is one of six members of the Class of 2024, which will be inducted on May 21 at a ceremony in Charlotte.
Â
Others set to be inducted along with Calder are Stanford women's basketball assistant coach Tempie Brown; Iowa men's basketball assistant coach Sherman Dillard; Louisville women's basketball associate head coach Stephanie Norman; Kansas men's basketball assistant coach Kurtis Townsend; and Virginia men's basketball associate head coach Jason Williford.
Â
During Calder's more than three decades on the UNC women's basketball staff under head coach Sylvia Hatchell, the Tar Heels made 23 NCAA Tournament appearances, winning the 1994 NCAA Championship and playing in two other Final Fours. The team reached the Elite Eight seven times and the Sweet Sixteen 15 times.
Â
UNC won eight Atlantic Coast Conference titles during that span.
Â
Calder served as acting head coach during the 2013-14 season when Hatchell stepped away while being treated for leukemia. That season, the Tar Heels went 27-10 and reached the Elite Eight with a win over top-seeded South Carolina.
Â
Nominees for the A STEP UP (Athletic Symposium to Elevate Professionals and Uplift Performance) Hall of Fame must be current or former NCAA DI, DII or DIII college basketball assistant coaches. Other criteria include:
• Respected among colleagues for high moral character and integrity
• Made significant contributions to the game and/or teams coached
• Been a part of winning, championship-caliber programs
Two former UNC men's assistant coaches have been inducted, Steve Robinson as part of the inaugural class in 2019 and Bill Guthridge in 2020.
