Women’s Lacrosse Treks North For Top-10 Showdown At Syracuse

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina women's lacrosse team will have yet another top-10 showdown as the ninth-ranked Tar Heels travel to Syracuse, New York, to take on the ninth-ranked Orange on Saturday, March 16. First draw is set for noon ET.
Playing in the JMA Wireless Dome, the game will broadcast nationally on ACC Network with Dana Boyle and Drew Carter on call.

Heels vs. Orange
This will be the 20th meeting all-time between Carolina and Syracuse. The Tar Heels lead the series at 12-7, and the series is tied at 3-3 for games played in Syracuse. UNC has out-scored SU 245-199 all-time.
In the Last Meeting
The two foes met twice during the 2023 season, most recently during the ACC Tournament semifinals. Third-seeded UNC defeated second-seed SU, 15-9. That win marked Carolina's 20th straight ACC Tournament win, the longest streak in conference history. Carolina Godine had a breakout game, leading all players with a career-high six goals and seven points.
The Orange got the best of the Tar Heels during the regular season, as No. 5 UNC dropped a hard-fought 14-12 decision to top-seed Syracuse.

The Tar Heels are coming off a 14-6 win over East Carolina on Tuesday night at home. UNC's stalwart defense was on full display as they posted a second-half shutout, limiting the Pirates to only 13 shots and nine shots on goal. Leading all players were Godine with three goals, Ashley Humphrey with four assists and Caitlyn Wurzburger with five points.

Syracuse head coach Kayla Treanor earned gold under Carolina head coach Jenny Levy at the 2022 World Championship. Treanor and UNC assistant coach Marie McCool were named to the 2022 All-World Team, and both Treanor and McCool also earned gold in 2017.

With a seven-point effort at Clemson followed by five points three days later vs. ECU, Wurzburger jumped from 11th to sixth on UNC's all-time career points list with 231. She's 15 points from tying McCool for fifth. Wurzburger also ranks fourth all-time in program history with 106 career assists. She's 15 assists away from ranking third and 26 from second. Her .720 shot percentage ranks third nationally.

Carolina's defense has held its opponents to 8.6 goals per game so far in 2024, and 8.3 in conference play. UNC is currently on a seven-game streak (ever since the season opener) of holding its opponent to 10 goals or under. In ACC play, the Tar Heels held Virginia (9), Notre Dame (7) and Clemson (9) to its fewest goals all season.
UNC's back line had a second-half shutout vs. ECU on March 12. They only allowed two goals during the entire second half (one each quarter) against #12 Florida on Feb. 17. They also held Liberty scoreless during the fourth quarter and High Point in the third.
