Aluka-White Makes Repeat Appearance On Watchlist
March 17, 2024 | Women's Basketball
For the second year in a row, North Carolina women's basketball assistant coach Joanne Aluka-White has been named to the ABIS (Advancement of Blacks in Sports) Watchlist for women's basketball assistant and associate head coaches.
The recently-released basketball lists includes top men's and women's coaches from across the country and this year highlighted 28 head coaches and 49 assistant coaches. Aluka-White is one of 26 coaches included on the watchlist of women's basketball assistant and associate head coaches.
Aluka-White is in her fifth season on the UNC staff and has been part of the Carolina staff since head coach Courtney Banghart's arrival in Chapel Hill. During that time Carolina has made three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 in 2022, with another on the way in 2024.
Prior to coming to Chapel Hill, Aluka-White spent seven seasons at Charlotte, serving two years as associate head coach. She started her career at Florida International with six seasons as an assistant coach.
Advancement of Blacks In Sports (ABIS) is a non-profit organization with a mission to advocate for a culture of equity and inclusion for Blacks in sports. The ABIS Black Coaches Watchlist is shared annually with athletic administrators and executive search firms. Those nominated are considered to be the year's most deserving, qualified, and prepared Black coaches in the NCAA to elevate their careers to the next level.
UNC graduate Cetera DeGraffenreid, who lettered for the Tar Heels from 2008-11 and ranks third in program history in career assists and steals, was also picked for the list. She's currently the associate head coach at UNC Greensboro.
